{FaithWorks4U – vintage style with a modern twist}

Tonight as Jeff and I were painting our bed {yes, I’m finally doing it!!  wood color to black! yay!}  we were talking about life and our reason for being here.  I know pretty deep for a night of painting.  But it had me thinking…what is my reason for being here, on this earth?  And what is it that I’m destined to do?  I was at a loss.  There’s part of me that thinks I’m here to do something related to adoption {since I was adopted}.  I don’t know what though.  Then I thought, is it something that I’m doing…being a mom?  The pictures below make me wonder if that’s why I’m here.  I love watching my kids grow, to see them learn, to see them soaking up life.  It’s such an amazing and surreal gift.  Someone I’ve created is living a life, laughing, crying, and growing into someone whose destiny is still unknown.   I don’t know, but it has me thinking, wondering and questioning why we’re here.  Why I’m here.   I know I’m going to drive myself crazy thinking about it.  I just hope I accomplish what I was put on this earth to do before my time ends.  Have you ever thought about why you’re here?  It’s wild to think about it but we all have a reason for being here.

Okay, on to something lighter and more fun :)   I have to say….I’m in love with this little retro outfit made by the talented FaithWorks4U.  I think it speaks for itself.  This night of photographing is one I’ll never forget, it was the start of Brielle’s adoration of the Hula Hoop.  Hopefully the images show the fun we had during this shoot.  Thank you Faith for sharing your beautiful talents with me – I can’t say enough about your retro fun designs. The dress Briella is wearing is appropriately named the ’1970′s Style Retro Hula Hoop’ dress.

Hello there, I first saw these photos a while back in FaithWorks4U – etsy shop. I saved the photos to use in my artwork and I’d love to share them with you at some point. I had no idea who they really belonged to – or who the little girl was. But I”m glad I found you! Thank you Google Reverse Image Search!

Stunning images as usual! I do think about why I’m here quite often. Some days the answer is clearer than others. I think my answers are always evolving along with me.

I’ve recently been asking myself the same question! I wrote about it a little on my “mommy blog” a couple months ago…

oh gosh these are all so beautiful!!!!

{sometimes you just need a good cry…}

This was how I felt today.  Okay, not this bad but close.  Here’s the short story:   I came home from seeing ‘Limitless’ (which I super enjoyed) with some girlfriends.  I was tired and the bed looked so comfy I didn’t think I’d be able to find the energy to wash my face, get into my comfy’s,  and make it to bed.  I just wanted my pillow.  But before I could do anything Jeff and I went in to check on the kiddos when we heard a squish, squish in the carpet and our feet felt wet.  It was 10pm, I was tired and this was waking me right up.  Jeff and I grabbed as many towels as we could and covered the floors with them.  It was still soaking!  We unloaded Tyler’s bookshelf and moved it to the other side of the room.  Then it was time to wake up the kids.  Brielle was sleeping in Tyler’s room (she loves to be close to him at night) so we carried each of them to our beds and snuggled them in.  It was time for the loud carpet cleaner to come out and suck up as much water as I could.  2 hours later and two buckets full of water later, I was done.   Wide awake but done.  This morning the carpets were still soaked so I had to call in the Professionals.  So right now our house is in disarray.  But we’re getting all the water-damage fixed.  The flood man told me the ‘Water Damage Gods were watching over me last night’ – he was amazed how much I was able to extract last night.  Yay for that late night second winds lol.   Anyway, it’s amazing how water can damage things – and fast.  Anyway, I’m spent but happy it wasn’t worse.   Happy and thankful for so much.

Photo:  This picture was taken just after Brielle hurt herself from falling, her emotions were so raw and my camera was right there – I just had to take a picture.  I feel her pain when I look at it.

I typed the keyword “cry photography” and seconds later my eyes were caught my this girl’s photo. Astoundingly beautiful! You really caught this amazing and touching moment that now catches me! Somehow after i came across a couple of crying photos today, I sort of fell in love with them. It’s another beauty that is different from the those sweet sunshine smiles. The face with tears seem to catch you deeper in the heart.

Btw, could you please let me know the first track of the background music of this blog? It is as beautiful as this photo of yours. Would appreciate it so much if you could even send the MP3 to me.

Thank you!

Dear Kara May,
I am writing to you to ask for very special permission to use this beautiful beautiful image of your daughter.In light of what I would to use it I will completely understand if you chose to say no. I will tell you why and ask you to please consider if you can. I was a victim of child sexual crimes. In fact I have quite a horrific story to tell and I won’t bore you with the details,but suffice to say by the time I was your daughters age I had been abused by four different people. All of them known to my family. I am a survivor and I consider myself one of the lucky ones.I have a background in child welfare. I hope to be a voice for those that don’t have one.
In recent times, it has come to my attention the leniency of sentencing CHILD sex crimes in Australia. With the recent release in WA of the sex offenders registry after a little digging I was astounded at the leniency of sentences. Time and time again, serious crimes were being sentenced at three years and under. It seems our legal fraternity does not consider this a serious crime. I would like to draw some attention to this both politically and socially, as I believe it is time to engage in social dialogue as a nation and provide some protection for our children.
I have been lobbying federal politicians and have decided to start a non profit community page on Facebook to try and draw some extra attention to this largely ignored issue. Whilst searching for a beautiful image, one that would invoke a strong emotional response from the audience I came across this wonderful image. I cannot see anything else now, it is so moving, the lighting, the single tear the colour of her eyes, beautifully shot image :)
I cannot pay for the image and I seek to gain no financial or otherwise gain. I just want a lovely image that is strong enough to make people stop and reflect upon the cause I aim to promote and that is adequate sentencing for sexual crimes against children.
I would love to hear back from you and I will respect your opinion regardless, but I hope as a mother and woman that you might hear my plea and allow me to use this image even if it is for a short period of time.
Kind regards
Ishca Anna Graham

Amanda KeeysMarch 25, 2011 - 6:50 am

Yikes the water sounds like a nightmare, especially when you just want to relax and sleep. Glad it wasn’t worse :)
Love the image… those big fat tears and her lips – wow. Painful, but worth remembering (especially when it’s translated into such a beautiful wrenching photograph).

NatashaMarch 25, 2011 - 12:53 am

The tears are flowing down my cheek as I write. In fact, I can’t see very well I have so many tears! Your picture truly speaks a million words. It has so much emotion, so many feelings, so many thoughts. It moved me right away – to wonder why she was crying, what pain she was feeling, what boo boo made her cry. My heart immediately went to her. You are so very talented Kara. This is an award winning photo and your daughter is so beautiful!

I am so sorry you had such a horrible clean up. And these things always come when we are so tired. Well done to rally! Good luck with all the water damage. It will be dry and back to normal before you know it. Thanks for sharing – I needed a little cry – it has been a tough week! XOXO

{Palm Tree Princess Spring 2011}

You may remember a post I did last fall for Palm Tree Princess for their Fall/Winter Line.  Lots of wonderful goodies for your little one.  Well it’s time… she’s releasing her Spring/Summer line now!  And she has a great line up of fun colors, light fabrics and pretty ruffles {who doesn’t love ruffles?!}.  And the beautiful hair accessories are by .  I just love them!!  I worked with Brielle & Ava on these images and they were such a fun, great team!!  Brielle was goofy as ever – she gets really silly during sessions, especially if she has another person to be silly with.  I love the girls interaction and can’t wait to photograph them together again for more designers.  Thank you so much to the talented Desiree, creator of Palm Tree Princess,  for working with me again.  I feel so blessed to work with such talented, fun and creative designers.

Aloha Kara,
Thank you again for such a lovely shoot. The girls are absolutley stunning. As always it was a pleasure to work with you.

{I will never forget tonight…}

I will never forget tonight.  The passion my little girl had.  The joy on her face.  The squeals and giggles that emanated from her little body.  The sun filtering through her hair.  Her little freckles sprinkled across her nose.  Tonight was special.  I’ve never seen this kind of joy from Brielle.  She’s a passionate child but tonight was different.  It was pure joy and proud accomplishment.  We did a session for a designer…{FaithWorks4U} and I decided to bring a brand new hula-hoop (unseen by Brielle prior to our session).  She screamed with excitement and was determined to use it and show me that she could use it.  After a handful of unsuccessful attempts I reassured her that it takes time to learn how to use it.  She still had a determined smile on her face and kept at it.  I watch and I soaked in the smile on her face, the look of resolve in her eyes, her mouth propped open as she tried and tried to keep the hula-hoop going and her laughter when she got it to go around her more than 3 times.  We cheered, laughed and stayed in the old lot we had occupied until the sun went down.  She begged, ‘one more time’, ‘just one more time’ more times than I can count and I couldn’t resist but say yes.  This moment will be gone in mere seconds, I wanted to soak it in as much as she did.  The sun had set by the time we got home.  I had a proud and excited girl buckled in chatting about how she wanted to do it as soon as we got into the house.  And again after dinner.  And again after her bath.  I loved it.  At dinner she said ‘I found something I’m really good at.  And I love it!’  I melted at her words, her excitement, the expression on her face…at her.  I will never forget tonight.
